Countdown to the New Year – Part 5

We want to succeed at the resolutions,goals,objectives,desires or whatever you want to call them.  And we need a plan.

Now, most time management trainers would tell you to develop a long-term plan,  but let’s keep with the theme here shall we?

NO overwhelm!  So instead of setting up a plan for the next 365 days, let’s just set one up for the next 30 days.

You can do anything for four measly weeks.  And the momentum from your success will then propel you forward.

But, (you knew there had to be one), there are some guidelines to setting these up.

#1.  Decide what the most important thing is first: You know what you want to do – loose weight, spend more time with your family, start up that business – so  decide what to focus on first.

If you want to loose weight, then maybe exercise is your first hurdle.  If you are going to finally start that business, then maybe writing your business plan is yours.

And, maybe you just need to pick something, anything that will get you closer to your goal.  Stop trying to optimize or choose the ONE thing that is best!

#2.  Allocate time in your schedule: We cannot simply add something to an already busy schedule – telling ourselves “I will exercise for an hour each morning”, but then getting up at the same time and going through our normal routine repeating over and over  “in a minute I will get to that jazzercise video” has not worked yet!

Last installment was about sacrifice.  And this is where it comes in.

That hour has to come from somewhere – and something else has to give.  So, decide what, when and where.

#3.  Be Incremental: Build up to your change.

It is not realistic to think that you are going to all of the sudden exercise for an hour if your current movement is limited to walking from the couch to the refrigerator.  So, in the spirit of underwhelm – work up to that hour by setting a goal for the next 30 days of 10 or 15 minutes a day.

We can do this.   Let’s make 2011 the year we reach those goals – ONE at a time!
