Time Management Course: Your Habits = Your Destiny

Tell me a person’s habits, I can predict their destiny.

Think about it, what you do on a daily basis, be it your eating, exercise or business habits, is what determines your future.

If you eat garbage, you will be unhealthy in the long run – (she says while eyeballing the bag of chocolate covered donuts).

If you don’t ever exercise, then no matter what you weigh, you will be unhealthy in the long run.

If you spend your prime productivity hours on the garbage of your business and never exercise your key money making skills, then no matter how good your business is right now, it too will be unhealthy in the long run.

Time management for a small business owner is about cultivating the habit of spending time on the most profitable aspects of the business.

There is a pattern for developing any habit, good or bad.

Action + Outcome + Reward = Habit

The action produces an outcome, which inturn results in a reward.  When this happens for long enough, a pattern is established from which your sub-conscious mind creates a habit.

We drink a cup of coffee, the outcome is that we are more alert and the reward is that we have the energy to get going with our day.  Thus, the habit is born of starting our day with coffee.

The problem comes when instead of receiving positive outcomes or rewards, out “rewards” are failures.

We start a new time management system, the outcome is that we are more stressed because it takes more time to organize our system and the reward is frustration.  Thus, the habit is of going back to our old ways and feeling like a failure is begun.

So, how do we interrupt that cycle?

First of all –  know the system.  Recognize these steps, because then you can define your own outcomes and rewards.

Instead of setting your sights on an outcome of “Organize My Life and Get My Time Under Control”, thus setting yourself up for failure, you can define your outcome as “Scheduling One Hour a Day to Work on Marketing Campaign”, which is much more manageable.

Then the reward will be completing that campaign.  And you will feel like a time management superstar, even though you have not rearranged your whole life, you have just finished one task.

Finish one task – thus taking a small step on your path to creating the new habit of spending time on the most profitable parts of your business.
